3 Seconds. That's All You Get. (How to Design a Billboard Ad That Works)
Not all billboard ads are created equal. Two businesses can pay the same rate on the same board — one gets calls, the other gets nothing. The difference is almost always the design.
Here's what separates ads that work from ads that just exist.
Rule 1: Design for a glance, not a read
Billboards are glanced, not read. Your viewer is driving. You get roughly 3 seconds of attention (a bit more at our locations, where dwell times run 15–90 seconds — but design for 3 anyway).
The test: show your design to someone for 3 seconds, then take it away. If they can't tell you who it's for and what it says, start over.
Rule 2: Seven words or fewer
Count the words on your draft. More than seven? Cut. Then cut again. The strongest billboards in history are often 3–5 words. Your website can explain; your billboard just has to land.
Rule 3: Massive type, massive contrast
- Text should be readable from 100+ metres. If you're squinting at the mockup on your phone, drivers can't read it from the road.
- Dark on light or light on dark. No mid-tones on mid-tones.
- One font, maybe two. Never three.
Rule 4: One focal point
One image OR one bold headline as the hero — not five photos, two logos, a QR code, a map, and a slogan fighting for attention. Every element you add steals attention from the ones that matter.
(And skip the QR code. Nobody scans at 60 km/h.)
Rule 5: Make the brand unmissable
The most common billboard mistake in Calgary: a clever ad where nobody can find the business name. Your name/logo should be instantly visible — because "Google them later" is the most common conversion path.
Rule 6: Built for digital screens
Digital boards are bright, so pure white backgrounds can glare at night. Rich colours pop. And since creative is swappable anytime, you can test versions — run one message for four weeks, swap it, and compare.
The good news
You don't need an agency. You need one clear message, big type, and the discipline to leave everything else out. And if design isn't your thing, we'll help you get the creative right before it ever hits the screen — a great ad on a great board is the whole recipe for success.

The ROI of a Billboard: How to Actually Get Your Money's Worth
"How do I know it's working?"
Fair question. Billboards don't come with a click report — but that doesn't mean the results are invisible. Here's how to measure them, and how to stack the odds in your favour.
How billboard ROI actually shows up
- Direct response. Calls, walk-ins, and "I saw your sign" mentions. Train your team to ask every new customer how they heard about you, and log it. Simple, free, and revealing.
- Branded search lift. People rarely call from the driver's seat. They Google you that evening. Watch your branded search traffic (people searching your business name) during your run — it's one of the most reliable billboard signals.
- Trackable offers. A billboard-only promo code, a dedicated phone number, or a memorable short URL turns "I think it's working" into "here's the number."
- The compounding effect. The real ROI often lands in months 2–6, not week 1. Awareness builds, then converts. This is why short one-month tests undersell what billboards can do — repetition is the mechanism, and repetition takes time. Let it simmer.
What good looks like
Billboard campaigns are typically measured against the cost of reaching a thousand people (CPM). Out-of-home consistently ranks among the lowest-CPM channels in advertising — and unlike digital, every impression is a real vehicle on a real road, verified by municipal traffic counts. On our network, that's 70,000+ vehicles a day across two boards.
We've seen what happens when it clicks: real Calgary advertisers on our boards have turned modest monthly spends into serious new revenue. (Ask us about our case studies on a call — we share real numbers, with client permission.)
Five ways to maximize your return
- One message, big type. Confused viewers don't convert.
- Run long enough for repetition to work. Commit to the frequency curve.
- Match the board to your buyer. B2B? Our Foothills board's traffic is 65% decision-makers.
- Pair it with digital. The board warms the audience; your website captures the action.
- Track from day one. Decide your measurement method before the ad goes live, not after.
The bottom line
A billboard isn't an expense you hope pays off. It's a measurable channel — if you set it up to be measured.

"Billboards Are for Big Brands" — And Other Myths Costing You Customers
Say "billboard" and most small business owners picture a national brand with a national budget. So they never even ask the price.
Here's the thing: digital billboards changed the math completely.
Why digital changed everything
Old-school static billboards sold one face to one advertiser. You paid for the whole sign, plus printing, plus installation — and if you wanted to change the message, you paid again.
Digital boards rotate advertisers. On a JAM board, your 6-second spot shares a 1-minute loop with up to 9 other businesses. You're buying time and frequency, not the whole structure. That's what puts billboard advertising within reach of owner-operated Calgary businesses — not just the nationals.
And your creative? Swappable anytime. New promotion, new season, new phone number — updated on screen without printing a thing.
Compare it to what you're already spending
Think about what local businesses routinely pay for:
- A part-time employee's wages
- A booth at one weekend trade show
- A month of digital ads that people scroll past, skip, or block
A billboard runs roughly 1,440 times a day, every day, in front of 35,000+ vehicles — no ad-blockers, no skip button, no algorithm deciding who sees you. Break your monthly rate down per day and you're often paying less than your morning coffee run costs per thousand impressions.
The honest caveat
Billboards aren't magic. They work best with a clear message, a decent run length, and realistic expectations (awareness first, phone calls follow). Any billboard company promising overnight miracles is selling you something else.
We'd rather right-size a campaign that renews than oversell one that disappoints. We win when you win.
